Speaking will be State Rep. Sam Park and State Rep. Matt Reeves, who will be giving a legislative preview of what lawyers can expect in the upcoming Georgia Legislative Session that may affect our law practice.
State Representative Sam Park is a native Georgian born and raised by a single mother who instilled in him the importance of faith, family and hard work. Sam's grandparents were refugees from the Korean War who moved to the US in the early 1980's in pursuit of the “American Dream.” Rep. Park earned his BA in Political Science and BS in Economics from Georgia State University in 2009, and his JD from Georgia State University College of Law in 2013. He also earned his Masters in Law in 2014 with a specialization in law, politics and legislation.
In December 2014, Sam’s mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Through her fight against cancer, Sam learned firsthand the importance of having access to healthcare. On a platform of expanding Medicaid to ensure access to healthcare for all Georgians, Sam ran for office as a first-time candidate in 2016 to become the first Asian American Democrat and first openly gay man elected to the Georgia State Legislature. During his first term as a legislator, Sam introduced comprehensive civil rights legislation, co-sponsored legislation to expand Medicaid in Georgia and defeated discriminatory legislation targeted at minority communities. Sam currently serves as a deputy whip in the Georgia House Democratic Caucus and as vice-chair for the Gwinnett State House Delegation.
State Representative Matt Reeves represents Suwanee, Sugar Hill and Duluth in Georgia State House District 99. Rep. Reeves serves as a member of the House Majority Caucus Whip Team and as the vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Reeves also serves on the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee, which focuses on criminal law. Reeves has dedicated his time to public service for the past two decades, serving as president of the Gwinnett County Bar Association, president of Duluth Rotary Club and member of the Duluth Parks Board. From 2008 to 2009, he also served as legal counsel to State Rep. Wendell Willard of the House Judiciary Committee and the Evidence Code Commission.
Rep. Reeves has lived in Gwinnett County since 2003. Rep. Reeves and his family are active members of Perimeter Church. Reeves is a native of Americus and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. Rep. Reeves fights for Gwinnett County’s taxpayers and homeowners in Georgia’s second largest county and the home of the state’s largest school system. He is a real estate and business litigation partner at Andersen, Tate & Carr, the largest full- service law firm outside of the perimeter in Metro Atlanta. Reeves graduated with honors from University of Georgia School of Law and Mercer University.
